What is Canada?

Canada is a land of beauty, and a land of opportunity—but it can be as harsh on life as any desert, as unforgiving as a forest, as rugged as a mountain, as scorching as the sun, and as cold as the Arctic. It bears everything but the wrath of the seas, the trembling of the earth, the fire of volcanoes, or the fury of great rivers. Now, that is Canada—no matter who rules it, no matter who comes, no matter who goes. This unique combination of beauty, opportunity, and adversity is what I call Canada

My core belief

Who is Canadian?

Anybody who has seen the beauty, endured the adversity, and still chooses to stay—with hope in the promise of opportunity—is a Canadian.

If you’re walking through a blizzard to get to work—calmly, as if strolling through an airport on your way to vacation—you’re Canadian.

If you’re passionate about your beliefs, and even despise those you think oppose you, yet still hold the door open for them when they walk in—you’re Canadian.

If you’re obsessed with America—whether you idolize it, resent it, call Canada the 51st state, or just hate their cockiness—you’re Canadian.

If you think about society, politics, humanity, your fellow humans—or even the world—just a little, that thought alone makes you Canadian.

And finally, if you’re not afraid to change your vote, or try a new political party—you are most certainly Canadian.
